How to use the time zone converter
Choose the date and the local time at the From location, then the To location. The large result is the clock time at the destination; the rows underneath give the destination date, whether it is the same day, the previous day or the next day, each zone's offset from UTC on that date, the difference in hours and the equivalent UTC time. Pick the real date of your call or flight — in many zones the answer changes with the season.
How time zones and UTC offsets work
Every zone is defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the reference time kept by atomic clocks. New York is UTC−05:00 in winter, meaning its clocks read five hours earlier than UTC; Tokyo is UTC+09:00 all year. To convert, subtract the source offset to get UTC, then add the destination offset. Not every offset is a whole hour: India is UTC+05:30, Iran UTC+03:30, and parts of Australia use +09:30.
Daylight saving time (DST) moves a zone's offset by one hour for part of the year. The United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia's south-east and New Zealand all observe it, on different dates and — for the southern hemisphere — in opposite seasons. Most of Asia, Africa and South America do not. This converter never stores offsets; it asks the browser's time zone database for the correct offset on the exact date you enter, which is why the date matters.
Worked example: a call between New York, London and Mumbai
You are in New York and propose 9:00 a.m. on a Friday in October.
- New York is on Eastern Daylight Time, UTC−04:00, so 9:00 is 13:00 UTC.
- London is on British Summer Time, UTC+01:00: 13:00 + 1 = 14:00, the same day.
- Mumbai is on India Standard Time, UTC+05:30: 13:00 + 5:30 = 18:30, the same day.
Propose the same call in late November, after US and UK clocks have gone back, and London shifts to 14:00 as well (both zones moved), but Mumbai becomes 19:30, because India did not change while New York did.

Tips for scheduling across zones
- State the zone with every time ("15:00 CET / 9:00 a.m. ET") and, for recurring meetings, say which city's clock the meeting follows — the other side moves when that city changes its clocks.
- Watch the date line. A 9 p.m. meeting in Los Angeles is already the next morning in Tokyo and Sydney; the Day difference row tells you when a day boundary is crossed.
- Avoid the DST switch weeks. Between mid-March and the end of March, and again in late October and early November, the US and Europe are temporarily one hour closer or further apart than usual.
- Use 24-hour times in writing to avoid a.m./p.m. mix-ups across cultures, and add the UTC time for anyone whose zone is not listed.
- Counting working hours or days around a trip? See the hours calculator and the days between dates calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time difference between New York and London?
Five hours for most of the year: London is ahead. For two to three weeks in March and about a week around the end of October the difference is four hours, because the US and UK change their clocks on different dates.
Why does the result change when I change only the date?
Daylight saving time. A zone’s offset from UTC can be one hour larger in summer, so the same wall-clock time maps to a different destination time depending on the season — and the summer season is reversed in the southern hemisphere.
What is UTC, and is it the same as GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the reference from which all zone offsets are measured. For everyday purposes it equals GMT; London uses GMT (UTC+00:00) in winter and British Summer Time (UTC+01:00) in summer.
How do I convert India time to US Eastern time?
Choose India as From and New York as To. India is UTC+05:30 all year, while New York is UTC−05:00 in winter and UTC−04:00 in summer, so the gap is 10.5 hours in winter and 9.5 hours in summer.
Which time zone has the largest offset?
Among the zones listed, Auckland reaches UTC+13:00 during New Zealand summer time and Honolulu sits at UTC−10:00, a 23-hour spread. Noon in Honolulu is 11:00 a.m. the next day in Auckland.
