How to use the Hijri date converter
- Choose a direction — Gregorian to Hijri, or Hijri to Gregorian.
- Enter the date — pick a Gregorian date, or type the Hijri day, choose the month and enter the year AH.
- Read the result — the converted date, the Arabic form, the weekday and a month-by-month table of that Hijri year.
Enter a day a month doesn't have — 30 Ramadan in a year when Ramadan has 29 days — and the converter says so instead of guessing.
How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri calendar counts years from the hijra, the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE; AH stands for Anno Hegirae. It is purely lunar: 12 months of 29 or 30 days, 354 or 355 days a year — about 11 days shorter than a solar year. That's why Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier every Gregorian year and passes through every season in roughly 33 years. For example, 1 Ramadan 1447 fell on February 18, 2026 and 1 Ramadan 1448 falls on February 8, 2027, 355 days later.

Umm al-Qura vs. moon sighting
There is no single worldwide Hijri calendar. Calculated calendars such as Umm al-Qura fix every month start in advance using astronomical rules for Mecca; Saudi Arabia uses it for official dates. Sighting-based calendars begin a month only after the new crescent has been seen, or after 30 days. Many countries and communities use sighting for Ramadan and the Eids, and Saudi Arabia itself announces those dates after a moon-sighting decision. The two methods usually agree, but can differ by a day. For religious observance, follow your local mosque or authority.
Where our dates come from
Umm al-Qura's rules have been officially changed several times, so no single formula reproduces the historical calendar. This converter uses the month starts as published: Umm al-Qura newspaper announcements for 1343–1355 AH, official comparison calendars for 1356–1450 AH and projections by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) for 1451–1500 AH, as compiled and documented by the open-source HijriDate project. We checked every day from 1420 to 1500 AH against Microsoft .NET's Umm al-Qura calendar, which agrees day for day. The Umm al-Qura table in the ICU library, used by most browsers, differs from the published calendar on about a third of the days in 1451–1500 AH, so we don't rely on it. The official KACST site is ummulqura.org.sa.
A few early months were officially announced with 28 or 31 days — 8 of them between 1343 and 1364 AH. The converter keeps them as announced.

Ramadan and the Eids may begin a day later where they depend on local moon sighting. To count the days to any of them, use the days between dates calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is today’s Hijri date?
Choose Gregorian → Hijri; the date field starts on today. Remember that the Hijri day changes at sunset, so after sunset many people already use the next Hijri date.
Why does another app show a different Hijri date?
It may use moon sighting, the arithmetic “tabular” Islamic calendar or ICU’s Umm al-Qura table instead of the published Umm al-Qura month starts. All of these can differ by one day — occasionally two.
Can I rely on this for Ramadan and Eid?
It gives the Umm al-Qura calendar dates, which are what Saudi government calendars print. The actual start of Ramadan and the Eids is announced after moon sighting and is sometimes a day different, so check your local announcement.
What date range does the converter cover?
From 1 Muharram 1343 AH (August 1, 1924) to the end of 1500 AH (November 16, 2077) — the period covered by official Umm al-Qura sources.
How do I convert my Hijri birthday to a Gregorian date?
Choose Hijri → Gregorian and enter the day, month and year from your documents. Because Hijri years are shorter, your Hijri birthday falls about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year; you can find your exact age with the age calculator.
