How to use the kg to lbs converter
Type the weight and pick the direction. For kilograms the result is shown as decimal pounds, as pounds and ounces (how US scales and babies' weights are reported) and as stones and pounds (how body weight is quoted in the UK and Ireland). For pounds the result is kilograms, with grams for small amounts.
The formula
The international avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so:
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 (≈ kilograms × 2.20462), and kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237.
A pound has 16 ounces, so 1 kg = 35.274 oz, and a stone is 14 pounds, so 1 st = 6.35 kg. All of these follow from the one exact factor.
Worked examples
- Body weight, 82 kg: 82 ÷ 0.45359237 = 180.78 lb. The 0.78 lb is 0.78 × 16 = 12.5 oz, so a US doctor's scale would read 180 lb 12.5 oz. In stones: 180.78 ÷ 14 = 12 remainder 12.78, so 12 st 12.8 lb.
- Checked baggage, 23 kg: 23 ÷ 0.45359237 = 50.7 lb. That is why so many airlines print "23 kg / 50 lb" on the same allowance: the metric limit is the real one, and the pound figure is rounded down.
- A 150 lb person in kilograms: 150 × 0.45359237 = 68.04 kg.

Stones, the UK way of weighing people
In Britain and Ireland body weight is usually said in stones and pounds: "eleven stone three" means 11 st 3 lb, which is 11 × 14 + 3 = 157 lb or 71.2 kg. Stones are rarely used for anything else today — groceries are sold in kilograms and grams, and medical records use kilograms — so the converter shows stones only as a secondary figure.
Mental shortcuts
- kg to lb: double the kilograms, then add a tenth of that. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (exact: 154.3).
- lb to kg: halve the pounds, then take away a tenth of the result. 150 lb → 75 − 7.5 = 67.5 kg (exact: 68.0).
- A kilogram is "a bit more than two pounds"; a pound is "a bit less than half a kilo". Both shortcuts are within 2%.
Where exactness matters
Medication doses are often prescribed per kilogram of body weight, so a weight recorded in pounds should be converted with the full factor rather than a shortcut, and the result checked by a pharmacist or doctor. Shipping rates and airline fees are another place where a kilogram rounded the wrong way crosses a price break. For gram-level amounts (recipes, postage), the unit converter also covers ounces, grams and tonnes.

Frequently asked questions
How many pounds is 1 kg?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds (2 lb 3.27 oz). The exact relationship is the other way around: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, so 1 kg = 1 ÷ 0.45359237 lb.
How do I convert kg to lbs in my head?
Double the number and add 10% of the result. 80 kg → 160 + 16 = 176 lb; the exact answer is 176.4 lb.
How many kg is 50 lb?
50 × 0.45359237 = 22.68 kg. A "50 lb" baggage allowance is slightly less than the 23 kg allowance that often appears beside it.
What is a stone in pounds and kilograms?
A stone is 14 pounds, or 6.35 kg. Ten stone is 140 lb (63.5 kg) and 15 stone is 210 lb (95.3 kg).
Is a pound of mass the same as a pound of force?
No. This converter uses the pound as a unit of mass (avoirdupois pound), which is what scales, recipes and body weight use. The pound-force is an engineering unit equal to the weight of that mass under standard gravity.
