How to copy and paste emoji

  1. Search or browse. Type a word — laugh, love, cat, pizza, birthday — or open one of the nine categories, from Smileys & emotion to Flags. Search uses each emoji’s official name plus the keywords from the Unicode CLDR project, so lol finds 😂 and fire finds 🔥.
  2. Tap the emoji. It is copied at once, and the line under the bar names it with its code points.
  3. Paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac), or long-press a text box on your phone and choose Paste.

Every emoji you tap is also added to the bar at the bottom, so you can build a row such as 🎉🎂🥳 and press Copy all. Your recent emoji stay at the top for your next visit, saved only in this browser.

Skin tones

Choose a skin tone once and every emoji that supports it changes: hands, gestures, people, jobs and families. Unicode added five skin-tone modifiers in 2015, based on the Fitzpatrick scale that dermatologists use (types 1–2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). Without a modifier an emoji shows the default yellow. 332 of the 1,923 emoji here come in all five tones. Couples and groups can also mix two different tones; this page offers the same tone for everyone, which covers most uses — your phone’s emoji keyboard can mix them.

Why emoji look different on every device

An emoji is a character, not a picture. When you paste 😂, you paste the code U+1F602; the phone or computer that shows it draws it with its own emoji font. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, WhatsApp and others each have their own artwork, so the same emoji can look noticeably different — a face more or less smiling, a different color, an animal facing the other way. What you see on this page is your own device’s design; the person you send it to sees theirs.

What’s on the page

The list follows the official emoji-test.txt file of Emoji 18.0, in Unicode’s own order: 1,923 emoji in 9 groups, using only the fully-qualified forms — the exact sequences that phones send and expect, including the invisible selector that asks for color presentation (❤️ rather than ❤). The skin-tone swatches and hair-style pieces, which are building blocks rather than emoji, are left out.

Typing emoji without this page

For plain text symbols such as ★ ♡ ✓ → use the symbol page. If your message is going out on WhatsApp, the WhatsApp link generator can carry emoji in a prefilled message, and the character counter counts each emoji as one character the way people see it.

Privacy

The emoji list loads once from this site; searching, tapping and copying all happen in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Your skin tone and recent emoji are stored only in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an emoji look different after I send it?

The receiving phone or app draws it with its own emoji font. The character is the same, but Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and WhatsApp each have their own designs.

Why do I see a box or two separate emoji instead of one?

Your device doesn’t have that emoji yet. Newer emoji need a recent system update, and combined emoji (such as 👩‍💻) show as their parts on systems that don’t know the combination.

How do I get a skin tone?

Pick one of the five tones above the list. Every emoji that supports skin tones changes, and the choice is remembered in this browser for your next visit.

Is copying emoji free and allowed?

Yes. Emoji are standard Unicode characters built into every phone and computer, so you can use them anywhere text is allowed. What can’t be reused freely is a company’s emoji artwork as an image.

Why don’t flags show on Windows?

Windows draws most flag emoji as two letters (the country code). The flag is there: paste it on a phone or a Mac, or in an app with its own emoji set, and it appears.
