How to record your screen
- Decide what to include: sound from the screen or tab (a video, a game, a meeting) and/or your microphone for narration.
- Press Start recording. Your browser opens its own sharing window: pick an entire screen, a window or a browser tab. To capture a tab’s sound, keep “Share tab audio” ticked in that window.
- Do what you want to show. The timer counts the recorded time; Pause and Resume continue the same video.
- Press Stop recording — or Stop sharing in the browser’s sharing bar. The take appears below with a player, its length, size and format.
- Download saves it, named with the date and time it started (for example screen-recording-2026-10-15_14-03-22.webm). Delete removes a take you don’t need.
Takes stay in this tab until you download them. If you try to leave the page with a take you haven’t downloaded, the browser asks you to confirm.
How it works
The recorder uses two features built into modern browsers. Screen capture lets you choose what to share in a window controlled by the browser itself — the page never sees your screen until you pick something, and the browser shows that sharing is on. The MediaRecorder then compresses the picture and sound into a video file on your device. When you include both the screen’s sound and your microphone, the two are mixed into one audio track. Videos recorded as WebM get their length written into the file at the end, so players can show the duration and let you jump around in it.
| Browser | File | Sound you can include |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Opera | .webm (VP9 or VP8 video, Opus audio) | A tab’s sound; on Windows also the whole system’s sound when you share an entire screen; your microphone |
| Firefox | .webm | Your microphone (Firefox doesn’t share screen sound) |
| Safari on a Mac | .mp4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) | Your microphone |
Which options appear in the sharing window depends on your browser version and operating system.
Example: a quick tutorial video
To show a colleague how to fill in a form: open the form in a tab, switch on Include my microphone, press Start recording and choose that tab. Talk through the steps, press Pause while you look something up, Resume, and stop when you are done. A few minutes of a mostly still screen usually makes a small file — the list shows its exact size before you download it.
Need an MP4?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM, which plays in every current browser, in VLC and on YouTube. If an app insists on MP4, convert the file on your computer — in VLC with Media › Convert / Save and an H.264 + MP3 (MP4) profile, or with the free FFmpeg command line: ffmpeg -i screen-recording.webm -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a aac screen-recording.mp4. Safari already saves MP4.
Tips and limits
- Mac: the first time, macOS asks you to allow the browser under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording (older versions: Screen Recording) and to reopen it.
- Protected video from streaming services usually records as a black area — that is the service’s copy protection.
- Long recordings are kept in the tab’s memory until you download them. Download long takes promptly and keep your device awake.
- Notifications pop up in an entire-screen recording too; turn on Do Not Disturb or record a single window or tab.
- Phones and tablets don’t let web pages capture the screen. Use the built-in recorder: Control Center › Screen Recording on iPhone and iPad, Quick Settings › Screen record on Android 11 and later.
- Check your microphone first with the mic test, record only your voice with the voice recorder, or test your camera with the webcam test.
Privacy
Nothing leaves your device: the browser records and compresses the video locally, the takes stay in the page’s memory, and they reach your disk only when you press Download. There is no account, no watermark, no upload and no time limit set by this site.
Frequently asked questions
Is this screen recorder free, without a watermark?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no upload: your browser records the video on your device, and you download it directly.
Can I record my screen with sound?
Yes. Turn on “Include sound from the screen or tab” and, in Chrome or Edge, keep “Share tab audio” ticked when you share a tab; on Windows you can also share the system sound with an entire screen. Turn on “Include my microphone” to add your voice. Firefox and Safari record the microphone only.
Why can’t I record on my iPhone or Android phone?
Mobile browsers don’t let web pages capture the screen. Phones have their own recorder: Screen Recording in Control Center on iPhone and iPad, and Screen record in Quick Settings on Android 11 and later.
What format are the recordings?
Chrome, Edge, Opera and Firefox save WebM files; Safari saves MP4. Each take shows its format and size. Convert WebM to MP4 with VLC or FFmpeg if you need it.
Is there a time limit?
No limit is set by the site. The video is held in the tab’s memory until you download it, so very long recordings depend on your device’s free memory.
