Magic 8 Ball

Magic 8 Ball

Think of a yes-or-no question, type it if you like, then press Shake or tap the ball. One of the 20 classic fortune-telling answers floats up, each with exactly the same chance. It is a toy for fun, not advice — and your question never leaves this page.

How to ask the magic 8 ball

  1. Think of a question that can be answered yes or no: “Will my team win on Sunday?”, “Should I text him back?” Questions like “What should I eat?” don’t fit the answers.
  2. Type it in the box if you want to — it helps you focus, but it is optional and never stored, shown back or sent anywhere.
  3. Shake: press the button, tap the ball, or press Enter in the question box. The ball wobbles and an answer appears in its window. Screen readers announce the answer and its type.

Ask again as often as you like. Like the toy, the ball gives a fresh, independent answer every time — asking the same question twice can easily get “Yes” and then “Very doubtful”.

The 20 answers and the odds

The classic ball holds 20 answers: 10 affirmative, 5 non-committal and 5 negative. This page uses the same split and draws each answer with exactly a 1 in 20 (5%) chance, using your browser’s secure random generator with rejection sampling. So half of all answers lean yes, a quarter dodge the question, and only a quarter say no:

Affirmative (50%)Non-committal (25%)Negative (25%)

Signs point to yes

A few odds worked out from that split: an answer that leans yes three times in a row happens 12.5% of the time. Ask five questions and the chance that at least one answer is non-committal is 76.3% (1 − 0.755) — the ball dodges a lot. The chance of one particular answer, say “Outlook good”, twice in a row is 0.25%.

How the original toy works

The real ball is hollow and filled with a dark blue liquid — about 100 ml of alcohol dyed blue in the modern version. Floating in it is a white plastic die shaped like a regular icosahedron: 20 triangular faces, one answer printed in raised letters on each. There is a round window on the bottom of the ball. When you turn it window-up, the die drifts up and one face presses flat against the window; the raised letters push the blue liquid aside, so you read white words on a blue triangle. Which face ends up on top depends on how the die tumbled, which is why shaking first matters.

This page imitates the experience, not the physics: the answer is chosen by an exact random draw, so every face really is equally likely — a physical die can be very slightly uneven.

Frequently asked questions

Is the magic 8 ball real or random?

Random. Neither the toy nor this page knows anything about your question. Here each of the 20 answers has exactly a 5% chance, drawn by your browser’s secure random generator. It is entertainment, not a prediction or advice.

How many answers does a magic 8 ball have?

Twenty: 10 affirmative (such as “It is certain” and “Outlook good”), 5 non-committal (such as “Ask again later”) and 5 negative (such as “Very doubtful”). That gives a 50% chance of a yes-type answer and 25% each for a dodge or a no.

What is inside a magic 8 ball?

A 20-sided die (an icosahedron) with one answer on each face, floating in dark blue liquid — dyed alcohol in modern balls. A window on the bottom shows whichever face floats up against it.

Is my question saved or sent anywhere?

No. The question box is only there to help you focus. The page never stores it, never displays it back and never sends it anywhere; the answer is drawn in your browser.

Is this the official Magic 8 Ball?

No. Magic 8 Ball is a trademark of Mattel, and this is an independent free tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by Mattel. It recreates the idea with the same 20-answer split.
