Anagram Solver

Anagram Solver

Type a word, a name or a short phrase to find its anagrams — words that use exactly the same letters, every one of them, once. You get single-word anagrams and two-word anagrams such as dormitory → dirty room.

Up to 30 letters. Spaces, capitals and punctuation are ignored.

How to use the anagram solver

  1. Type a word, a name or a short phrase. Spaces, punctuation, capitals and accents are ignored, so Dormitory! and dirty room are read as the same nine letters.
  2. Read the one-word anagrams first: words that use every letter exactly once.
  3. Then the two-word anagrams, longest first word first. Choose the shortest word you will accept — 3 letters hides most two-letter oddities, 4 letters gives cleaner phrases.

Results update as you type. The dictionary is downloaded once (about 440 KB) and searched inside your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What counts as an anagram

An anagram uses exactly the same letters as the original, each as many times as it appears — nothing left over and nothing added. SILENT is an anagram of LISTEN; SILT is not, because it leaves out E and N. If you want every word that can be made from some of your letters, with Scrabble points and blank tiles, use the word unscrambler instead.

How it works

Two words are anagrams when their letters, sorted alphabetically, are identical: LISTEN, SILENT and TINSEL all sort to EILNST, which the solver shows as Letters to rearrange. Shuffling is hopeless — 11 letters can be ordered almost 40 million ways — so the solver compares letter counts with each of the 172,823 words in its dictionary, once.

For two-word anagrams it first collects every word that fits inside your letters. For each one it works out the letters left over and looks up the words made of exactly those. DORMITORY minus DIRTY leaves M, O, O and R, which spell MOOR and ROOM. Each pair is listed once, longer word first, and the phrase you typed is not listed as its own anagram. Long inputs can produce hundreds of pairs, so the first 200 are shown along with the total.

These are the solver’s real results with its dictionary. Most words have no single-word anagram at all; two-word anagrams are far more common, because short words combine in many ways.

Which words count

The dictionary is ENABLE, a public-domain list of 172,823 English words compiled for word games. It includes plurals, verb forms and rare words — that is why ELINTS (electronic intelligence signals) sits next to SILENT. Names and other proper nouns are not in it, so a name can be the input but never part of an answer.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t my word have any anagrams?

Most words don’t have a single-word anagram — the letters simply don’t spell anything else. Look at the two-word results, and lower the shortest word length to 2 letters to see every combination.

Do spaces, capitals or punctuation matter?

No. Only the letters A–Z count, and accented letters count as their plain letter (É is E). Café au lait is read as AAACEFILTU.

Can it find three-word anagrams?

Not directly — with two words, long phrases already give hundreds of results. To build a longer anagram, choose one word, remove its letters from your phrase, and solve the rest.

Why are some results strange words?

The ENABLE dictionary is made for word games and keeps rare but valid words. Setting the shortest word to 4 letters removes most of the oddest two- and three-letter words from the pairs.

Is what I type uploaded?

No. The word list is downloaded once and the search runs in your browser; your words are not sent to a server or saved.
